Wednesday night brought the figure 8 derby. The regular demolition derby is all about destroying other cars, but the figure 8 derby is a race that just happens to have a bit more contact than most other races.

Chelsea Football vs Ecorse: 3 September 2015
Chelsea football welcomed Ecorse to town.
Each week, Chelsea has honorary captains, people who have contributed to the program in some way. These captains are often former players, but the week 2 honorary captain was…my family. We ate the pregame meal with the team, and we were part of the pregame meeting. This photo shows my dad reading a message from one of my brothers who played football for Chelsea but couldn’t make it to the game:
While that was happening, a severe storm was passing through Chelsea. A lightning strike knocked out power to part of town, including the football stadium, leaving everyone to wait out the storm under the emergency lights.
The weather cleared, but the power stayed off until juuuuust before they were ready to postpone the game. The game started two hours late, but it started!

Chelsea Fair Demolition Derby: 25 August 2015
Tuesday evening brought the always-popular demolition derby. If you’re not familiar with demolition derbies, here’s how they work: a bunch of old cars smash into each other until only one can move. It’s a thoroughly entertaining spectacle.
Tuesday’s derby had notable spectators: Debi Mazar and Gabriele Corcos from the Cooking Channel show Extra Virgin. They spent the summer traveling around America for a new show called Extra Virgin Americana, and as part of their stop in Detroit they visited Chelsea to check out the demolition derby. (Making a sport out of destroying old worn-out cars does seem pretty American. It’s also lots of fun to watch!) Here’s a cameraman filming the action.
There are plenty of ways cars can get knocked out of the derby. The engine can die, the drivetrain (or some other crucial part) can fail, a whole wheel can fall off…or a back bumper can get pushed down and lift your drive wheels off the ground. It’s hard to move when your wheels aren’t on the ground.

Chelsea Fair Overview: 25-29 August 2015
The Chelsea Community Fair was last week! Chelsea Update ran bunches of my photos as part of its extensive coverage of the fair, so be sure to head over there to see everything that went on at the fairgrounds. I’ll be posting more extensive sets of fair photos over the next few weeks, but for now, here’s a quick look at some of the highlights of fair week in Chelsea.

Chelsea football scrimmage: 20 August 2015
Chelsea football had its preseason four-team football scrimmage with Jackson, South Lyon East, and Lansing Catholic Central.
This was Chelsea’s first play of the day.
It went for a touchdown.
That was a good way to start the scrimmage!
